Labour and anti-Semitism in 2018: The truth behind the relentless smear campaign against Corbyn

Bombarded by disinformation campaigns, many British Jews are being misled into seeing Corbyn as a threat rather than as the best hope of inoculating Britain against the resurgence of right-wing anti-Semitism menace by Jonathan Cook End-of-year polls are always popular as a way to gauge significant social and political trends over the past year and predict where things are heading in the next. But a recent poll of European Jews – the largest such survey in the world – is being used to paint a deeply misleading picture of British society and an apparent problem of a new, left-wing form of anti-semitism. Part 6 - Hostility to Muslims Nativism in European states is primarily directed against Muslim and Arab immigrants arriving from the Middle East and North Africa, though domestic Jews could well become collateral damage in any future purge of “foreigners”. Europe’s ultra-nationalist leaders are, therefore, more likely to sympathise with Israel and its own “Arab-Musli

The Brexit chaos: Theresa May’s government survives no-confidence vote

The UK government led by Theresa May, has survived to fight another day, after winning a no-confidence vote, tabled by Jeremy Corbyn's Labour Party, following parliament rejecting the PM's Brexit deal, earlier on Tuesday evening. The no-confidence vote was defeated by 19 votes – the government winning by 325 to 306. It's a rare positive note for May's Tory cabinet after the humiliating Brexit defeat. Speaking immediately after the vote, a victorious May said she was "pleased" that the House expressed its confidence in her government. May said she will "continue to work" to deliver on the result of the Brexit referendum and leave the EU. May invited the leaders of parliamentary parties to meet with her individually, beginning on Wednesday evening. Updates: https://www.rt.com/uk/448976-may-tories-win-confidence/

How a neocon-backed “fact checker” plans to wage war on independent media

As Newsguard’s project advances, it will soon become almost impossible to avoid this neocon-approved news site’s ranking systems on any technological device sold in the United States. by Whitney Webb Part 3 - Keeping the conversation safe for the corporatocracy Newsguard describes itself as an organization dedicated to “ restoring trust and accountability ” and using “ journalism to fight false news, misinformation and disinformation. ” While it repeatedly claims on its website that its employees “ have no political axes to grind ” and “ care deeply about reliable journalism’s pivotal role in democracy, ” a quick look at its co-founders, top funders and advisory board make it clear that Newsguard is aimed at curbing voices that hold the powerful — in both government and the private sector — to account . Newsguard is the latest venture to result from the partnership between Steven Brill and Louis Gordon Crovitz, who currently serve as co-CEOs of the group. Bri

New documents reveal a covert British military-intelligence smear machine meddling in American politics

The Integrity Initiative has mobilized an international disinformation campaign across Europe. Now, with government and right-wing foundation money, this massive “political smear unit” is infiltrating the US. by Max Blumenthal and Mark Ames Part 3 - Lessons from “the man who sold the war” A newly released Integrity Initiative document reveals that the outfit plans an aggressive expansion across the US. The Integrity Initiative claims to have already established a “simple office” in Washington DC, though it does not say where. It also boasts of partnerships with top DC think tanks like the Atlantic Council , the Center for European Policy Analysis , CNA, and close relationships with US officials. A major hub of Integrity Initiative influence is the State Department’s Global Engagement Center , a de facto US government propaganda operation that was established by President Barack Obama to battle online ISIS recruitment, but which was rapidly repurposed to counter

The memo that helped kill a half million people in Syria

The memo shows the advice Hillary Clinton was getting to plunge the U.S. deeper into the Syrian war. As Trump seeks to extricate the U.S. the memo has again become relevant, writes Daniel Lazare. by Daniel Lazare Part 1 A memo sent to Hillary Clinton that WikiLeaks made public in 2016 has not gotten the attention it deserves. Now is the time. After President Donald Trump tweeted that he was pulling American troops out of Syria, Clinton joined his vociferous critics who want more war in Syria. “ Actions have consequences, and whether we’re in Syria or not, the people who want to harm us are there & at war, ” Clinton tweeted in response to Trump. “ Isolationism is weakness. Empowering ISIS is dangerous. Playing into Russia & Iran’s hands is foolish. This President is putting our national security at grave risk. ” Actions indeed have consequences. The memo shows the kind of advice Clinton was getting as secretary of state to plunge the U.S. deeper into th

The Twitter smearing of Corbyn and Assange

Historian and U.K. analyst Mark Curtis checks out the Twitter accounts of journalists whose names have been associated with the Integrity Initiative, a British “counter disinformation” program. By Mark Curtis Part 1 The U.K.-financed Integrity Initiative , managed by the Institute for Statecraft , is ostensibly a “counter disinformation” program to challenge Russian information operations. However, it has been revealed that the Integrity Initiative Twitter handle and some individuals associated with this program have also been tweeting messages attacking Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn. This takes on special meaning in light of the numerous U.K. military and intelligence personnel associated with the program, documented in an important briefing by academics in the Working Group on Syria Propaganda and Media . Several journalists have been named as associated with the Integrity Initiative , either in program “clusters” or having been invited to an Integrity Initiati

All the right progressives are running for 2020 ... but they need a really smart strategy to have a chance against the neoliberal beast

globinfo freexchange More than a year ago we wrote that the 2016 electoral process in the US was particularly useful because it highlighted many interesting unprecedented aspects. One of them, is that you don't need the mainstream media to promote you. Especially the young Americans discovered and promoted Bernie Sanders through the independent and social media on the Internet. Another aspect, is that you don't need big money to support you. These new conditions could be proven valuable towards the creation of a third political movement, coming straight from the people, which could seriously challenge the current corrupted political establishment. We also wrote that we can think at least four progressives that should join forces to lead such a political movement right now: Jill Stein, Bernie Sanders, Tulsi Gabbard, Elizabeth Warren. Three of them already revealed their intention to run for the 2020 US presidency. Assuming that the Greens won't change leadersh

“Dystopian, creepy” surveillance of Assange in embassy

In a #Unity4J Vigil 12.0 interview with Joe Lauria, Cassandra Fairbanks described a recent visit to Julian Assange in the Ecuadorean embassy. She said there was more of a 'process' this time. “ Last year I organised the visit with his lawyers ” she said, “ The embassy wasn't involved at all. It was really simple. This time I had to fill out a form detailing where I work, my employer's address, all my social media accounts. If I wanted to bring my phone in I would have had to provide the IMEI, serial number and all kinds of other information about any device I brought. I figured it would be easier just to leave it behind. ” Inside the embassy things were also different. “ The amount of cameras and microphones were double or triple what was there last year. Now no matter where you're standing, no matter where you are, there's a camera picking you up and from pretty much every angle also which was a little bit dystopian, creepy. ” To get
