Libya far from peace ...

A year after Libya's rival parties signed a UN-sponsored political agreement, the North African country still suffers a political division and unrest. The Libyan government of national accord was appointed on Dec. 17, 2015 in order to put an end to the political division in the country. However, Libya is still divided between two rival governments and parliaments. Since the uprising that toppled leader Muammar Gaddafi's government in 2011, the North African country has been struggling to make a democratic transition. " The unity government faces a number of obstacles, mainly its inability to control on the ground, as well as the growing influence of militias in the capital, Tripoli, which weakens the government and leads to hikes in foreign currencies prices, " Mahmoud Karim, a Libya academic researcher, told Xinhua. Al-Mabruk Khalifa, a Tripoli-based writer, believes that the failure of the political elite to reach a true agreement is on

What would be Trump's biggest mistake

by system failure As John Pilger describes in his new documentary The Coming War on China , the "threat of China" is becoming big news. The media is beating the drums of war, as the world is being primed to regard China as the new enemy. What is not news, is that China itself is under threat. A quick look at the map of the American military bases in Asia-Pacific, is adequate for someone to understand that they form a giant noose, encircling China with missiles, bombers, warships. It is quite clear that the Western plutocracy is changing the agenda because it sees that the Sino-Russian alliance is trying to build an independent bloc which could become a serious threat against the dollar domination, and therefore, the neoliberal model, through which the elites are hoping to establish their global supremacy. Many support that the newly elected US president, Donald Trump, is a big question mark, especially concerning the US foreign policy. First of all, we must

Exposing the real 'fake news' about Aleppo and Syria

The Syrian military is helping hundreds of thousands of civilians evacuate areas in eastern Aleppo which are currently controlled by rebel and extremist groups. While millions of Syrians have suffered since the current civil war evolved from the Arab Spring protests of 2011, it’s become all but impossible to separate real news from pro-war propaganda paid for by the United States and its allies. As dubious claims of genocide, often based on fake photos, flood social media and mainstream media alike, people are faced with the complex task of separating real reporting from U.S.-government backed “fake news.” Efforts to lure the West into a supposedly “humanitarian” military intervention with Syria have been almost continuous throughout President Barack Obama’s eight years in office. WikiLeaks’ archive of U.S. diplomatic cables reveals that the United States, Israel and Saudi Arabia have been planning to overthrow Syrian leader Bashar Assad since at least 2006. Al

Trump calls for greater US nuclear capabilities

President-elect Donald Trump has set Washington atwitter again with a cryptic and seemingly unprompted pronouncement about the necessity to expand the US' nuclear capabilities. “ The United States must greatly strengthen and expand its nuclear capability until such time as the world comes to its senses regarding nukes, ” Trump tweeted on Thursday afternoon. Earlier in the day, the president-elect blasted the UN Security Council over an “unfair” draft resolution regarding Israel and reiterated his commitment to “draining the swamp” in Washington. He offered no indication as to what might have prompted remarks about nuclear weapons. Thursday’s tweet seems to diverge from Trump’s public position on nuclear weapons that he expressed during the campaign. The billionaire businessman campaigned on a platform of rebuilding the US military while cutting taxes and reining in federal spending. He was critical of outgoing President Barack Obama’s plan to modernize

Quiet since WWII, Japan begins $44 billion re-militarization to confront China

Cold War 2.0 The Japanese government has announced it will bolster its coast guard capabilities to defend disputed islands in the East China Sea. China also claims and regularly patrols these islands. The coast guard budget is expected to reach a record of 210 billion yen (approximately $1.8 billion), adding eight new ships and more than 200 law enforcement officials. Japan’s government also just approved a record defense budget of 5.1 trillion yen (approximately $44 billion), with a focus on China and North Korea. The budget is set to include six new submarines equipped with improved sensor technology, which is to be used to deter the challenges presented by the Chinese. The increased funds will also go toward an upgraded missile defense system. Japan has supposedly been investing in a submarine program since the 1950s and analysts consider the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force’s submarine fleet to be one of its core strengths. However, it remain

Syrian Army declares Aleppo under full control

The Syrian Army has regained control over all of Aleppo and has returned “ security and stability to the city, ” the army's general command said. The Red Cross has confirmed that a complex operation to evacuate those who "wished" to leave has been completed. The city has been liberated from "terrorism and terrorists" the statement said, as quoted by Syria's state SANA news agency. Aleppo will now mark a turning point in the war against terrorism, the Syrian Army statement said. “ It strikes a smashing blow to the forces that backed a terrorism plot against Syria, ” the statement added. " All civilians who wished to be evacuated have been, as well as [the] wounded and fighters, " International Committee of the Red Cross spokeswoman Krista Armstrong said, according to Reuters. Syrian President Bashar Assad said on Thursday that the liberation of Aleppo from terrorism is a victory not just for Syria but for all those who

ECB's silent coups - Next victim: Cyprus

After ECB's silent coups against Ireland and Italy , Frankfurt will keep sending ultimatums to the eurozone governments. If they don't bailout the banks, or impose austerity, it threatens to sink the economy into chaos by cutting liquidity. The pretext is always the huge public debt. But when Cyprus' turn comes, there is a 'slight' problem: Cyprus did not have a significant debt. globinfo freexchange The real problem of Cyprus was not the public debt, but the speculation of its private banks. In collaboration with Greek bankers and thanks to ECB's tolerance, they were burdened with Greek bonds - which was worse than trash. According to Pampos Papageorgiou, a Cypriot politician with the Progressive Party of Working People (AKEL), Deutsche Bank and other foreign banks were trying to get rid of them. They offered them with discount and Cypriot banks bought them. Papageorgiou concludes that, it is surprising that the supervising authoritie

U.S. President Barack Obama on Tuesday banned future oil and gas drilling in most of the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans, the latest move to cement his environmental legacy before he leaves office next month. Using his authority under the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act that allow presidents to withdraw areas from oil and gas leasing and exploration, Obama has protected the entire U.S. Chukchi Sea and the vast majority of the U.S. Beaufort Sea in the Arctic Ocean and 31 canyons in the Atlantic Ocean from drilling, the White House said.
