When Washington cheered the Jihadists

Official Washington helped unleash hell on Syria and across the Mideast behind the naïve belief that jihadist proxies could be used to transform the region for the better.

Part 2 - Assessing the Damage

Five years later, it’s worth a second look to see how Washington uses self-serving logic to reduce an entire nation to rubble.

First a bit of background. After displacing France and Britain as the region’s prime imperial overlord during the 1956 Suez Crisis and then breaking with Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser a few years later, the United States committed itself to the goal of defeating Arab nationalism and Soviet Communism, two sides of the same coin as far as Washington was concerned. Over the next half-century, this would mean steering Egypt to the right with assistance from the Saudis, isolating Libyan strongman Muammar Gaddafi, and doing what it could to undermine the Syrian Baathist regime as well.

William Roebuck, the American embassy’s chargé d’affaires in Damascus, thus urged Washington in 2006 to coordinate with Egypt and Saudi Arabia to encourage Sunni Syrian fears of Shi‘ite Iranian proselytizing even though such concerns are “often exaggerated.” It was akin to playing up fears of Jewish dominance in the 1930s in coordination with Nazi Germany.

A year later, former NATO commander Wesley Clark learned of a classified Defense Department memo stating that U.S. policy was now to “attack and destroy the governments in seven countries in five years,” first Iraq, then Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Iran.

Since the United States didn’t like what such governments were doing, the solution was to install more pliable ones in their place. Hence Washington’s joy when the Arab Spring struck Syria in March 2011 and it appeared that protesters would soon topple the Baathists on their own.

Even when lofty democratic rhetoric gave way to ominous sectarian chants of “Christians to Beirut, Alawites to the coffin,” U.S. enthusiasm remained strong. With Sunnis accounting for perhaps 60 percent of the population, strategists figured that there was no way Assad could hold out against religious outrage welling up from below.

Enter Gambill and the FP. The big news, his article began, is that secularists are no longer in command of the burgeoning Syrian rebel movement and that Sunni Islamists are taking the lead instead. As unfortunate as this might seem, he argued that such a development was both unavoidable and far from entirely negative.

Islamist political ascendancy is inevitable in a majority Sunni Muslim country brutalized for more than four decades by a secular minoritarian dictatorship,” he wrote in reference to the Baathists. “Moreover, enormous financial resources are pouring in from the Arab-Islamic world to promote explicitly Islamist resistance to Assad’s Alawite-dominated, Iranian-backed regime.

So the answer was not to oppose the Islamists, but to use them. Even though “the Islamist surge will not be a picnic for the Syrian people,” Gambill said, “it has two important silver linings for US interests.” One is that the jihadis “are simply more effective fighters than their secular counterparts” thanks to their skill with “suicide bombings and roadside bombs.

The other is that a Sunni Islamist victory in Syria will result in “a full-blown strategic defeat” for Iran, thereby putting Washington at least part way toward fulfilling the seven-country demolition job discussed by Wesley Clark.

So long as Syrian jihadis are committed to fighting Iran and its Arab proxies,” the article concluded, “we should quietly root for them – while keeping our distance from a conflict that is going to get very ugly before the smoke clears. There will be plenty of time to tame the beast after Iran’s regional hegemonic ambitions have gone down in flames.

Just when the DNC "barons" openly call for a coup against Bernie Sanders, Politico accidentally reveals Bloomberg's real mission: "slow Sanders' delegate march" on Super Tuesday

globinfo freexchange
The sequence of events should not be considered random. It all started with a key question on the recent Democratic-primaries debate stage in Las Vegas.
MSNBC's Chuck Todd (you know, the one who described Bernie Sanders supporters as a "digital brownshirt brigade"), asked the candidates if the person with the most delegates at the end of the primary season should be the nominee even if they don't have a majority of the delegates. Of all the candidates, only Sanders answered positively, without hesitation. Something which, of course, shouldn't surprise us much.
The whole matter circulated around the corporate and the independent media for a while, with the progressives attempting to capitalize Bernie's response, in order to demonstrate his deeply democratic "reflexes" against the rest of the establishment candidates.
But it seems that the question was put in place by the establishment in order to test the "reflexes" of …

Another astroturfing operation against Bernie Sanders fails miserably

... right before the battle in South Carolina
globinfo freexchange
We are about to lose count of the number and different types of smear campaigns and dirty tricks that the DNC establishment has tried against Bernie Sanders so far.
As the DNC "barons" and their super-wealthy donors understand now that Sanders' big power lies within a continuously growing, progressive movement behind him, they are trying to deal with it through the practice of astroturfing. In short, they are trying to undermine Bernie's authentic, grassroots movement, with a virtual one.

We witnessed another operation of this type during the latest Democratic debate, right before the next primaries battle in South Carolina. The operation involved an audience of supposedly authentic, ordinary voters, who, quite strangely enough, booed Sanders and cheered the billionaire Bloomberg!

Yet, one more time, progressive independent media (along with Sanders), exposed the new trick immediately.

We can't just wait for robots and 3D printers to overthrow capitalism

by system failure

During a speech four years ago, Yanis Varoufakis ended with some interesting views about the future of the capitalist system. As he pointed out:
The world we live in, is increasingly rudderless, in a constant slow burning recession, while at the very same time, the increasing concentration in the IT sector is creating the new technologies that will do that which the Left has failed to do: overthrow Capitalism. It is really very simple. The moment machines pass the Turing test properly, and you pick up the phone and you do not know whether the person you are talking to is a human being or a machine˙ the moment we are going to have 3D printers operating as public utilities - you can send any blueprint to it and it can print from one pin to a motorcycle, or to a car - the moment that this happens, we have not just a process of Schumpeterian creative destruction, but we have a process where economies of scale and the whole logic of corporate Capitalism colla…

Bernie's most powerful secret weapon is not Latinos

globinfo freexchange
A lot of discussion circulated around the independent and the corporate media about Sanders campaign ability to approach successfully the Latino community.
Progressive reporters and journalists of The Hill's Rising show went further on the issue, claiming that the Latino vote is Bernie's secret weapon on Super Tuesday, as it has been proven to work so far in the primaries.

While, undoubtedly, the Latino vote will be crucial on the outcome of the Democratic primaries process, it is not Bernie's biggest secret weapon. Bernie has another potential secret weapon - much more powerful - that could make him sweep the primaries and even grab the number of delegates that the DNC demands. And the good news is that he is the only one who could activate it.
Right before the decisive Super Tuesday battle, two DNC agents, Pete Buttigieg and Amy Klobuchar, were ordered to withdraw their nominations in order to unify the moderate vote around the "dinosaur" J…

It's official: the oligarchs and the corporate media declare war on Sanders' progressive movement

globinfo freexchange
We can safely now say that Bloomberg's propaganda ad against Bernie Sanders' supporters marks the establishment's official declaration of war on the progressive movement. Previously, corporate media revived the "BernieBro" myth in order to open the road for the war.
As we already mentioned, the anti-movement hysteria reached unprecedented levels when MSNBC anchor Chuck Todd compared Sanders' supporters to Nazi brownshirts! Todd's preposterous comparison wasn't accidental. He was specifically targeting moderate voters of the Democratic party. The aim was to scare them and prevent further popular-vote leakage from the establishment nominees towards Bernie during the next primary battles.
Michael Bloomberg grabbed the chance and tried to amplify further the BernieBro-scare through a blatantly propagandistic sample of negative advertisement. He doesn't have any movement behind him, but he has a lot of money to spend for smear camp…

Social Media and Social Control: how Silicon Valley serves the US State Department

Facebook isn’t the only Silicon Valley firm with partisan oversight of what we see: the bipartisan billionaire class and their security state have partnered with tech firms since the dawn of the internet to control the parameters of users’ thinking.
by Morgan Artyukhina
Part 17 - Pentagon-Google cooperation
Alphabet’s Eric Schmidt, too, is connected to the U.S. security state as well as to the Democratic Party, again proving that a cross-party link is established where the material interests of the billionaire class are shared. A man who joined the Google team early-on in 2001, by 2011 Schmidt was able to step down from Google’s Chief Executive Officer to be the Executive Chairman of its Board of Directors with a $100 million equity award. He maintained that position through the 2015 restructuring of Google into the holding company Alphabet, Inc., stepping down in 2017 only to become chairman of the Pentagon’s Defense Innovation Board, an advisory committee to the Secretary of Defense.…

The Council of Europe drives another nail into the coffin of the case against Julian Assange

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange will continue his fight in court against extradition to the US on 24 February. The US case for extradition of the publisher – effectively for the ‘crime’ of exposing government wrongdoing – is littered with flaws and faces widespread opposition from the public.
Now, the Council of Europe’s commissioner for human rights has put another spanner in the works in the case against Assange. The commissioner, Dunja Mijatović, has released a statement insisting that the WikiLeaks founder should not face extradition. She’s not the only senior human rights figure doing so either.
Mijatović released the statement on 20 February, just days before the next round in Assange’s fight against extradition. It reads:
Julian Assange’s potential extradition has human rights implications that reach far beyond his individual case. The indictment raises important questions about the protection of those that publish classified information in the public inter…

REVEALED: Chief magistrate in Assange case received financial benefits from secretive partner organisations of UK Foreign Office

The senior judge overseeing the extradition proceedings of WikiLeaks publisher Julian Assange received financial benefits from two partner organisations of the British Foreign Office before her appointment, it can be revealed.
by Matt Kennard and Mark Curtis
Part 4 - Same addresses
Declassified has discovered that the addresses given by Lord Arbuthnot and other parliamentarians for Tertulias and Tatlidil have been the same — despite no obvious connection between the two organisations other than the UK Foreign Office. All the addresses are residential with no clear reason why they would be official addresses of high-level Foreign Office-linked fora.
In 2012, Arbuthnot recorded in his parliamentary register of interests that the address of both organisations was a Grade II listed house in the village of Cowlinge, Suffolk, which has a population of just over 600 people. From 2013-16, the address changed to a house in Higham, a small village with 140 people, also in Suffolk.

It's actually the liberal elites that are now on the ropes, not Bernie Sanders

globinfo freexchange

Bernie Sanders' latest defeat in another round of the Democratic presidential primaries was received by most of the liberal corporate media almost as his political ending. Just take a quick look at the headlines. You will immediately recognize a bizarre anxiety by most of them to portray Joe Biden as the ultimate winner in the mother of all battles.
One more time, the liberal apparatus has been exposed, giving one more evidence that the liberal elites are considering Sanders as a biggest threat than even Donald Trump. One more time, the liberal establishment completely justified the perception circulated among many progressives: corporate Democrats would rather lose to Trump again than give Sanders the leadership of the party.

So, why all this anxiety?

First of all, the primaries are not over yet. Sanders may have suffered another defeat, but he won't give up easily. And the fact that he is still there, ready to crush Biden in a debate with just the two of…

Το Μητσοτακικό καθεστώς βυθίζει τη χώρα στο χάος

globinfo freexchange
