The explosive mixture of middle-class shrinking and dual economy in the West

The Pew Research Center, released a new study on the size of the middle class in the U.S. and in ten European countries. The study found that the middle class shrank significantly in the U.S. in the last two decades from 1991 to 2010. While it also shrank in several other Western European countries, it shrank far more in the U.S. than anywhere else. Meanwhile, another study also released last week, and published in the journal Science, shows that class mobility in the U.S. declined dramatically in the 1980s, relative to the generation before that. A book released last March by MIT economist Peter Temin argues that the U.S. is increasingly becoming what economists call a dual economy; that is, where there are two economies in effect, and one of the populations lives in an economy that is prosperous and secure, and the other part of the population lives in an economy that resembles those of some third world countries.

MIT Economist Peter Temin spoke to Gregory Wilpert and the The Real News network.

As Temin states, among other things:

The middle class is shrinking in the United States and this is an effect of both the advance of technology and American policies. That is shown dramatically in the new study, because the United States is compared with many European countries. In some of them, the middle class is expanding in the last two decades, and in others it's decreasing. And while technology crosses national borders, national policies affect things within the country.

In the United States, our policies have divided us into two groups. Above the median income - above the middle class - is what I call the FTE sector, Finance, Technology and Electronics sector - of people who are doing well, and whose incomes are rising as our national product is growing. The middle class and below are losing shares of income, and their incomes are shrinking as the Pew studies, both of them, show.

The model shows that the FTE sector makes policy for itself, and really does not consider how well the low wage sector is doing. In fact, it wants to keep wages and earnings low in the low wage sector, to provide cheap labour for the industrial employment.

This model is similar to that pursued in eurozone through the Greek experiment. Yet, the establishment's decision centers still need the consent of the citizens to proceed. They got it in France with the election of their man to do the job, Emmanuel Macron.

As already described, the middle-class, which has not collapsed yet in France, still has the characteristics that fit to the neoliberal regime. However, it is obvious that this tank of voters has shrunk significantly, and the establishment is struggling to keep them inside the desirable 'status quo' with tricks like the supposedly 'fresh', apolitical image of Emmanuel Macron, the threat of Le Pen's 'evil' figure that comes from the Far-Right, or, the illusion that they have the right to participate equally to almost every economic activity.

For example, even in Greece, where the middle class suffered an unprecedented reduction because of Troika's (ECB, IMF, European Commission) policies, the last seven years, the propaganda of the establishment attempts to make young people believe that they can equally participate in innovative economic projects. The media promotes examples of young businessmen who have succeed to survive economically through start-up companies, yet, they avoid to tell that it is totally unrealistic to expect from most of the Greek youth to become innovative entrepreneurs. So, this illusion is promoted by the media because technology is automating production and factories need less and less workers, even in the public sector, which, moreover, is violently forced towards privatization.

As mentioned in previous article, the target of the middle class extinction in the West is to restrict the level of wages in developing economies and prevent current model to be expanded in those countries. The global economic elite is aiming now to create a more simple model which will be consisted basically of three main levels.

The 1% holding the biggest part of the global wealth, will lie, as always, at the top of the pyramid. In the current phase, frequent and successive economic crises, not only assist on the destruction of social state and uncontrolled massive privatizations, but also, on the elimination of the big competitors.

In the middle of the pyramid, a restructured class will serve and secure the domination of the top. Corporate executives, big journalists, scientific elites, suppression forces. It is characteristic that academic research is directed on the basis of the profits of big corporations. Funding is directed increasingly to practical applications in areas that can bring huge profits, like for example, the higher automation of production and therefore, the profit increase through the restriction of jobs.

The base of the pyramid will be consisted by the majority of workers in global level, with restricted wages, zero labor rights, and nearly zero opportunities for activities other than consumption.

This type of dual economy with the rapid extinction of middle class may bring dangerous instability because of the vast vacuum created between the elites and the masses. That's why the experiment is implemented in Greece, so that the new conditions to be tested. The last seven years, almost every practice was tested: psychological warfare, uninterrupted propaganda, financial coups, permanent threat for a sudden death of the economy, suppression measures, in order to keep the masses subservient, accepting the new conditions.

The establishment exploits the fact that the younger generations have no collective memories of big struggles. Their rights were taken for granted and now they accept that these must be taken away for the sake of the investors who will come to create jobs. These generations were built and raised according to the standards of the neoliberal regime 'Matrix'.

Yet, it is still not certain that people will accept this Dystopia so easily. The first signs can be seen already as recently, French workers seized factory and threatened to blow it up in protest over possible closure. Macron may discover soon that it will be very difficult to find the right balance in order to finish the job for the elites. And then, neither Brussels nor Berlin will be able to prevent the oncoming chaos in Europe and the West.

Hyper-educated poor: one of the last 'achievements' of collapsing capitalism

globinfo freexchange
Truthdig's Robert Scheer spoke with Alissa Quart about the "hyper-educated poor" phenomenon on the context of her new book.
An interesting part of the story is the bizarre psychology of 'self-blaming', identified in most of these highly educated people who are increasingly struggling to find a job proportional to their skills and knowledge.
Quart explains:
You have $1.5 trillion student debt. You have, an income inequality thrumming under all this. Since 1997 the top one percent, its income has grown 20 times faster than the other 90 percent. It’s so high now, and the gap is so great. And you have this whole world of counselors and coaches and certificate programs that, I think of them as like vultures on the carcass of the middle class. Also, when you’re talking about race, the whites’ median wealth is 68 times the median wealth of African Americans.
So, in the middle class, it starts to mirror that too; I talked to an African American woman who …

Highly suspicious latest poll shows corporate Democrats will promote Joe Biden against Bernie Sanders

globinfo freexchange
Just when we were writing this story, David Doel of the Rational National already uploaded a relevant video, which shows how obvious are the tricks of the establishment and how fast can be uncovered in our days.

The video is about a recent poll which highlights the Democrats that could beat Trump:

Spot on.
To expand a little further Doel's insightful analysis, we simply compared how the poll was presented by two different types of media. The independent leftist Common Dreams took the results from Politico, presented them under the title By Double-Digit Margin, Poll Shows Sanders Mopping the Floor With Trump in Latest 2020 Matchup, and put the picture of Bernie Sanders at the top.
Politico itself (part of the liberal establishment media), didn't put any winner in the title. However, as you can see, there is a picture of Joe Biden at the top with the phrase "Former Vice President Joe Biden leads President Donald Trump in a hypothetical 2020 match-up, 43 perc…

WikiLeaks paper confirms Angela Merkel had no real intention to take action against the bankers

The WIKILEAKS Public Library of US Diplomacy (PlusD)holds the world's largest searchable collection of United States confidential, or formerly confidential, diplomatic communications. As of April 8, 2013 it holds 2 million records comprising approximately 1 billion words. The collection covers US involvements in, and diplomatic or intelligence reporting on, every country on earth. It is the single most significant body of geopolitical material ever published. The PlusD collection, built and curated by WikiLeaks, is updated from a variety of sources, including leaks, documents released under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and documents released by the US State Department systematic declassification review.

How normal human behavior became a false mental disorder epidemic

globinfo freexchange
In the early nineties, an epidemic of mental disorder was sweeping America and Britain. It had been uncovered by a new system for identifying disorders. Psychiatry had been attacked for relying on the personal and fallible judgement of psychiatrists.
But instead, a new objective method based on checklists had been invented. These listed only the objective symptoms, and deliberately did not enquire into why the individuals felt an anxiety. In the late 80s, nationwide surveys had revealed an incredible picture: more than 50% of Americans suffered from mental disorders.
But at the very same, the drug companies had announced that they had created a new type of drug, called an SSRI, which they claimed, targeted the circuits inside the brain that were causing these malfunctions. The SSRIs were marketed under names like "Prozac". What they did was alter the amounts of serotonin that flowed across the circuit connections within the brain, and they readjusted the …

Western nations were never set up as democracies - and it's going to get even worse

globinfo freexchange
As Yanis Varoufakis said in this recent interview:
Europe and the United States were never set up as democracies. Read the Federalist Papers. It was all an attempt to make sure that the riffraff do not control governments. We hark back to the Magna Carta. The Magna Carta was not a democratic instrument, it was a charter of barons. It was all about their right to have slaves and not to be taxed by the king.
Aristotle defined, I think, democracy very well even though he was anti-democratic. He said it's a system of governance where the many — and therefore the poor, who are always in the majority — control government.
It is impossible for our sophisticated societies to become sustainable without democracy. Democracy is not a luxury.
If you go to Europe today, what unites them [people] is a sense of hopelessness. A sense that their democracies have been usurped, that their democratic rights mean absolutely nothing, that there is a decision making process, which combi…

Tulsi Gabbard: the very same terrorists responsible for 9/11 attacks are the US ground force in Syria

globinfo freexchange
Nearly two years ago, Tulsi Gabbard introduced a bill to stop the US from arming terrorists in Syria. Two years later, the US proxies are losing the war, yet the Empire refuses to accept the defeat. Gabbard spoke with Jimmy Dore and gave, one more time, the real picture. Not only the terrorists in Syria are essentially the US ground force, but also, the Saudis are paying vast amounts of money to the US to promote their agenda in the Middle East.
Key points:
Not only are [Saudis] paying for these wars and using our sons and daughters lives to carry out their bidding, but they're also paying a lot of these think tanks in Washington. A ton of money to issue opinions, and ideas, and plans, and proposals that jive with their agenda.
Specifically in Syria, now, since 2011, both overtly and covertly, the United States has been providing arms, intelligence and equipment to fighters who are allied with, fighting alongside, working with Al-Qaeda in this regime change war.

The brutal neoliberal experiment has ended for the boiled frog Greece - what we should be expecting next

globinfo freexchange
The fact that Brussels euroclowns celebrated in triumph the exit of Greece from the memorandum agreement, should be taken only as a huge farce.
The Troika (ECB, European Commission, IMF) bailout program has officially ended and the result is a scenery of disaster. If you still believe that this program has been implemented to save the Greek economy and not the Franco-German banks, take a look at the situation today.
Greece entered the bailout program with national debt at 120% of GDP. Now, the debt remains close to 180% of GDP! Unemployment remains at record levels. Public property has been sold-off for pennies to foreign 'investors'. Labor rights almost vanished, the situation resembles the Middle Ages. Social state and benefits severely damaged. This is the Troika 'success story'.
So, in reality, the experiment was indeed successful for the goals of the international capitalist predators who transformed the country into a debt colony. For more than e…

The establishment tools have recently eliminated a very promising progressive - here is how they did it

globinfo freexchange
In the following video, Kyle Kulinski describes how he schooled Fox tools on progressive policies. The debate was set up on the occasion of another 'interview' (4:18 - 5:22 in the video) in which Cori Bush appeared to be quite unprepared to deal with Fox’s aggressive style. Unfortunately, shortly after this ugly attack, Cori Bush, a very promising progressive, lost in primaries, and 'surprisingly', most of the establishment media (both liberal and conservative), indirectly welcomed the result with a kind of relief.

Many progressives reacted with a kind of embarrassment on Cori Bush's response, yet in reality she did nothing wrong. It was certain tactics by the Fox tool that made Bush appear unreliable, and in this case, these tactics were (unfortunately) successful.
Examine again the video.
First of all, the Fox tool literally invaded in the place and started aggressively asking questions to Cori Bush about that tax issue. The tactic is very common…
